Why Vintage? Why now?
We are enjoying the resurgence of vintage taking hold right now. Handcrafted, dovetailed construction, grained woods, artisan-made pottery, there is so much beauty in objects and furniture that were created decades or centuries earlier. Corporations and modern manufacturers did a very good job of persuading the public for the last 30 years that anything old was not worth having - acquiring new, shiny, unconnected was the way to spend your hard-earned money and demonstrate your success – to be replaced five years later with whatever is new and shiny again. We have lost the appreciation of what was, that connection to lives and loves from generations before.
But as our forests burn and riverbanks overflow, we are seeing the impact of our decisions.
Are we saying don’t buy new? Of course not. We are saying take a look at antiques and vintage before you purchase new. While bringing our own grocery bags to the supermarket makes us feel like we are contributing to better world (and we are!), extend that thinking to include other objects you may need to purchase for your home. New furniture is being made to look like the designs of the past and are often much more expensive than the real thing. Think about the task you want that piece to do – can you reimagine a vintage piece to do that task?
Here are some examples: Rolling towels to sit in your spa bathroom adds a touch of luxury. What about placing those towels in a vintage magazine rack? Old door knockers make wonderful hand towel racks, wooden pulleys add a rustic feel when used for plants, drop front desks become beautiful bars, hand embroideries are framed as art.
Vintage enables us to reimagine, rethink and redesign – the ultimate recycle. And when we pair these vintage pieces with the modern, the magic happens. We see a blend of generations, a link forward and a connection to a past. There’s always a story connected to a vintage piece and now that story becomes part of you and your home.
Feel good about your purchases. You are contributing to the circular economy. Vintage has returned and the earth is better for it.
